A Table that Unites Opposing Concepts

Prism, designed by Maurie Novak, is not your average coffee table. It is a piece of art that combines modern technology with meticulous handcrafting to create a truly unique and visually stunning piece. The table's design is inspired by both natural and mathematical forms, resulting in a balance between simplicity and complexity.

The frame of Prism is made of silver stainless steel, which not only provides a sleek and modern look but also radiates into a rainbow of colors. The frame is created using modern technology, with laser-cut holes and CNC routing to ensure precision and quality. However, the real magic happens within the frame.

Inside the minimal frame of Prism, a complex array of elastic ropes is meticulously threaded by hand. The geometry of the ropes creates a complicated pattern, which is actually the result of only two simple equations. This intricate pattern, combined with the play of light and color, gives Prism its mesmerizing and ever-changing appearance.

Measuring 1200mm x 1200mm x 460mm, Prism is not just a static piece of furniture. As you move around the table, the pattern and colors continuously change, revealing new lines, voids, and color combinations. This dynamic element provides a unique and captivating experience for the viewer every time they look at it.

The creation of Prism was not without its challenges. The designer had to come up with constraints and rules to create a guiding logic for the pattern within the table. By using a prism as inspiration, a triangulated form was chosen, allowing access under the table from three sides and making it comfortable to have in a living environment.

Prism was first envisioned in November 2012 and took almost a year until the first prototype was made. It was unveiled on the internet in January 2014 and received widespread attention across design websites. The first production run of the table was completed in March 2014.

This unique coffee table has been recognized for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2014, which is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Prism's combination of minimalism, complex geometry, and captivating visuals truly make it a standout piece of furniture.
